About the Pashmi Hound
The Pashmi Hound is a stunning variation of the renowned Caravan Hound, distinguished by its beautiful feathered coat. While maintaining all the classic features of its smooth-coated cousin, the Pashmi Hound showcases elegant hair growth on the tail, ears, chest, and belly areas, giving it a more luxurious appearance with a slightly longer overall coat.
Heritage & History
This noble breed traces its ancestry to the legendary hounds brought to India through the historic Khyber Pass. Afghan Hounds, Salukis, and other prized sighthounds accompanied the Afghans, Pathans, Mongols, Persians, and Arabs as they traveled with trading caravans—hence the name “Caravan Hound.”
These resilient dogs were strategically bred by local villagers who prioritized functionality over appearance, selecting for weather resistance, hunting prowess, and desirable temperament traits. The result is an exceptionally hardy breed with remarkable disease immunity and outstanding stamina.
Physical Characteristics
Size: Males 68-72 cm (26.8-28.3 inches) | Females 64-68 cm (25.2-26.8 inches)
Build: The Pashmi Hound exhibits classic sighthound elegance with a long, narrow head that broadens between the ears, tapering to a refined muzzle. Large, black nostrils complement powerful jaws, while long ears hang gracefully close to the skull. Dark hazel eyes are large, oval, and perpetually alert.
The muscular neck flows seamlessly into well-laid shoulders, supported by long, straight, well-boned forelegs. A broad, well-muscled back leads to wide, deep loins and a strong, deep chest with well-sprung ribs. The distinctive high-stepping gait showcases fluid movement with impressive leg flexion.
Coat & Colors: Fine yet coarse texture in beautiful shades of fawn, red, cream, black, or combinations with white markings.
Tail: Strong at the base, moderate length, carried in a natural curve (never over the back).
